Annual Church Bar-B-Que
The Bar-B-Que was brought to Calvary by Pastor Kauffman and has been an annual summer event ever since. It is sponsored by the Session providing a venue for fellowship with the community, as well as a fund raising opportunity. Delightful aromas fill the air on this particular Sunday morning making concentrating on a long sermon difficult for the congregation. In the early years the men and women of the church roasted beef on their grills at home and then returned the roasts to the church to be sliced and readied for the event. The menu in recent years has been expanded to include serving pig roasting in the hot sun. Luncheon is served under a tent erected on the lawn. Since the menu for this very successful event includes delicious dishes prepared by parishioners, it is questionable whether "pig served" refers to the menu or the diners! No matter the weather, a good time is had by all at this Summer Fest.
Hawaiian Luau
During the cold winter days in February, the members of the congregation are invited to be the special guests of Pastor and Linda Kauffman at an authentic Hawaiian Luau held in our fellowship hall. Muumuus and Hawaiian shirts are the dress of the day. Pastor plans the menu and acts as chef. He can be seen rattling pots and pans in the kitchen for days before the event. The evening begins with PuPu, another name for appetizers. The menu is diverse, including a favorite in Hawaii, Calamari, otherwise known as squid. The treat of the evening is Linda's special dish, Haupia. This delectable Island treat is best tasted, descriptions are insufficient. Not only is the food spectacular, but there is also a slide presentation so that everyone can experience a virtual Hawaiian vacation.
Mother-Daughter Banquet
This annual event is sponsored by the Presbyterian Women. Mothers and daughters are invited to share the evening together. However, being a mother or daughter is not required for attendance, all ladies of the church are invited to come with a friend or adopt a mother or daughter for the evening! This is ladies night off. The men of the church pamper the ladies by acting as waiters and take care of the clean up. Not only is the meal superb but the entertainment brings delight and sometimes quite a chuckle. The after dinner entertainment varies from year to year.
Talent Show
This event is an opportunity for everyone from one to 101, to come out and have a good time. Talent varies from songs performed with sign language, our own Puppeteers and Handbell Choir to Joyce Parnell's incredible little grandson who performed as a magician producing birds of of nowhere! A highlight of the evening is Pasto Kauffman's rendition of Jeremiah Jeremias, a preacher from the backwoods, complete with straw hat and his lovely pianist Elvira (Linda Kauffman). Elvira plays many songs which all sound amazingly like the music of "On Top of Old Smokey"!
